Child Abuse CASA Crisis Continues

By: James Clark

The child abuse crisis in Lubbock continues. There are more confirmed cases of child abuse than there are volunteers who help those kids. CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, acts as a liaison between abused kids and the court system. Next week CASA begins a four part series of training events for new volunteers.

“As of right now we only have about five to seven people signed up for this first training of the year,” says CASA Development Director Rose Carkeet. News Radio 1420 asked her if the there’s been progress in getting enough volunteers so that every abused child in the greater Lubbock area can have a CASA representative.

“Unfortunately the gap has grown even larger. This area though conservative has one of the highest amounts of confirmed child abuse cases in the state of Texas.”

We have the training schedule posted below, along with a link to CASA right here. You can volunteer by calling 763-2272. Back in September 2006 CASA stopped taking any new child abuse cases because there were just too many. Now, CASA takes new cases but not every child in the court system has a representative. So if you can step forward and do something about that call CASA.
