| Reese: Looking Back On 10 Years By: James Clark Lubbock turns disaster into prosperity. What’s the secret? Ten years ago this week we were lamenting the imminent closure of Reese Air Force Base. The base closing ceremony was September 30th 1997. Reese would be handed over to mere mortal civilians who were charged with making the property useful. And so, Reese was the first base to complete the BRAC process. BRAC of course is Base Realignment and Closure. Reese is the national standard by which you convert a former air force base. Here’s Reese Technology Center Director of Business Development Todd Reno. Reno says, “There was about 35 hundred jobs that left the base and 12 hundred of those were civilian jobs. Since then we’ve brought back more than 700 jobs. And it’s more than $27 million of economic impact.” And many of those 721 jobs are high-paying. As a matter of fact, Reno’s boss told News Radio 1420 that Reese has 2-and-a-half times more economic impact as a technology park then it did as an air base. Reno says, “We’ve got quite a few buildings. But of the ones that are rentable, y’know there’s some that need to be torn down, we’re pushing about 90 percent occupancy.” Current tenants include the Gene Messer Auto Group accounting division, the Lubbock Police Academy, South Plains College, Supachill, The Institute of Environment and Human Health, Towner Manufacturing, and WesTex Document, Inc. What’s the Reese secret to success? Part of the super-secret formula for success is an OC 192 Fiber Optic System. Huh? In other words Reese has a really, really, really fast Internet connection, (about One Million times faster than a typical high speed connection in Lubbock) and they can offer awesome Internet service to their tenants. Another super secret ingredient is cost avoidance. Reese does not spend a single penny they don’t have to spend. If they can do a job in-house instead of hiring it out, or if they can get a government grant that’s how things are handled. We’ll continue our special series of reports tomorrow. Reese Air Force Base… ending its tour of duty 10 years ago this week.
