| High Speed Chase Ends in Arrest By: Dave Walker The Department of Public Safety took an Illinois man in custody after a high speed chase Sunday afternoon. 31-year-old Rodolfo Gavina was arrested and charged with attempted capital murder of two DPS Troopers, evading arrest, and driving under the influence of narcotics. The 30 minute chase took place on Highway 84 ending around 4:30 p.m. just two miles east of Lubbock city limits. DPS says it started in Garza County east of Post when troopers received a call about a reckless driver in a 2001 Tahoe. Gavina failed to stop when a trooper tried to pull him over initiating the high speed chase. DPS Corporal John Gonzalez says Gavina was drive at high speeds westbound on Highway 84 putting several other drivers in danger as he made his way up to the Lynn/Lubbock County lines. "A trooper attempted to place some spikes. At that time the driver of the vehicle attempted to run over the trooper." Gonzalez says troopers fired shots at Gavina's Tahoe. The back right tire was hit forcing Gavina off the highway and over railroad tracks causing some damage to the rails. Troopers were forced to break through his passenger window. "He refused to cooperate not getting out of the vehicle. Officers were having to fight with him," said Gonzalez. That's when Gonzalez says troopers had to tase Gavina while he was in the front seat. EMS was called out to treat Gavina and transported him to UMC along with a trooper for the safety of the EMS personnel. The incident is still under investigation.
