| Lubbock Drilling New Water Wells, Bailey County By: James Clark Lubbock spends millions of dollars to the northwest also spend tens of millions to the north and hundreds of millions to the southeast. Despite several recent rain storms around Lake Meredith, we’re back to setting new record lows every day for the lake level. The recent rainfall seems to have extended the life of the lake by about five days. Meanwhile Lubbock takes steps to make sure our secondary water supply does not fail. The city just went out for bids on eight new water wells in Bailey County. Assistant City Manger Tom Adams says, “As the groundwater level continues to decrease over time it does require that we rehab existing wells or that we drill new wells in order to keep the production up.” Adams did not want to give up specific dollar figures on this project because it’s still out for bid. But he did give us a figure for the overall improvements in Bailey County including water lines, electric lines and pipe line improvements. “We’re spending several million dollars with the different projects that we have underway.” Concerning the projects he could remember off hand, he says the cost is about “$3 million.” But the money to keep water flowing is just the first problem. Adams says Lubbock faces new state rules & regulations meant to preserve the water level in the Ogallala Aquifer, and “… establish criteria for saving groundwater and having what they call future desired conditions.” That includes the water wells in Roberts County as well as Bailey County.
