Dr. Schidly denies any interest in the job of Chancellor. Furthermore he denies he ever contacted officials at Texas Tech to express interest. Here at News Radio 1420 we stand by our orginal story. Related Story: Schmidly Denies It Related Story: Schmidly Denies Interest News Radio 1420 has learned from multiple sources that former Texas Tech President David Schmidly is very interested in the job of Chancellor. Schmidly is now the President of Oklahoma State University. He left Texas Tech six months after Dr. David Smith became Chancellor. Schmidly is known in academia for his study of mammals including the Mexican long-nosed bat. He also has a species of mouse named after him… Peromyscus schmidlyi. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s at Texas Tech and a Doctorate from the University of Illinois. He worked 25 years for Texas A&M University. Schmidly has a long list of accomplishments at Oklahoma State particularly in the area of fundraising. He’s also known as a strong supporter of OSU athletics. However, his tenure at OSU has not been totally free of controversy. OSU has plans for an Olympic style athletic village, which would mean the demolition of many homes in Stillwater. When asked if OSU would use eminent domain, Schmidly is quoted as saying, “It is always an option, but we want to work with property owners.” The possible threat of OSU forcing people out of their homes has not gone over well. While our sources can definitely confirm Schmidly’s interest in Texas Tech, they cannot confirm whether or not that interest is reciprocated by the board of regents. We have placed calls to the two regents who live in Lubbock. If they call us back we’ll ask if they have an interest in Schmidly. He certainly has his supporters in Lubbock. For instance… Bob Knight was once quoted as saying he came to Texas Tech because of two people: Athletic Director Gerald Myers and Former president David Schmidly.
